The cost of Halloween Candy is up 13.1% since last year, and to make matters worse, they're giving us less in every package.

For example, Good 'n Plenty is now Not Bad 'n a Couple.

The $100,000 Bar is now the $27 Bite.

Then, of course, there's the new 2 Musketeers bar.

In promising news for murderers everywhere, the results of a new study indicate the month of October is the perfect time to bury a dead body in your own front yard.

"The Halloween season provides the ideal camouflage for the act of actually burying a corpse in plain sight," said Barry Gusey, Professor of Anthropology at the University of Missouri, where the study was conducted. "Our findings show that digging a grave and burying a body in any other month of the year is sure to raise red flags and likely draw the attention of law enforcement."

As a part of the study, researchers even went as far as to put up clearly written signs reading "DEAD BODY BURIED HERE" with arrows pointing to a mound of freshly shoveled dirt. When no unusual attention was paid even after dumping buckets of fake blood all over the yard and scattering various instruments of torture in the area, the results of the study became strikingly evident.

"This is a game-changer," said Ben Casey, long suspected by locals to be a serial killer. "I've spent a lot of time and effort over the years trying to dispose of…unwanted objects. Knowing that I can just wait until October to bury these…items…will really make things easier."

At publishing time, the research team was already eagerly planning its next study to determine if the night of July 4th was, indeed, the perfect day to bomb something.

Quote of the Times;
In the early 1970s Muhammad Ali fought for the heavyweight title against George Foreman. The fight was held in the African nation of Zaire; it was insensitively called the "rumble in the jungle." Ali won the fight, and upon returning to the United States, he was asked by a reporter, "Champ, what did you think of Africa?" Ali replied, "Thank God my granddaddy got on that boat!" There is a characteristic mischievous pungency to Ali's remark, yet it also expresses a widely held sentiment. Ali recognizes that for all the horror of slavery, it was the transmission belt that brought Africans into the orbit of Western freedom. The slaves were not better off—the boat Ali refers to brought the slaves through a horrific Middle Passage to a life of painful servitude—yet their descendants today, even if they won't admit it, are better off. Ali was honest enough to admit it.“ — Dinesh D'Souza

The Middle Class Is Dying by Michael Snyder

50 Percent Of All American Workers Made Less Than $3,133 A Month Last Year!

Inflation is systematically destroying our standard of living, and the middle class is shrinking a little bit more with each passing day. The Social Security Administration just released wage statistics for 2021, and the numbers that they have given us are quite stunning. As you will see below, half of all American workers made less than $3,133 a month last year. Once upon a time, you could live a very comfortable middle class lifestyle on $3,133 a month. But thanks to inflation, such a wage now puts you just barely above the poverty level. The decisions that our leaders have been making are absolutely eviscerating the middle class, and that should deeply trouble all of us.

You can find the new Social Security Administration wage report right here. The following are some statistics that I pulled out of the report…

-More than 30 percent of all American workers made less than $20,000 last year.

-More than 41 percent of all American workers made less than $30,000 last year.

-More than 52 percent of all American workers made less than $40,000 last year.

-More than 62 percent of all American workers made less than $50,000 last year.

These numbers tell us that most Americans are just barely scraping by, but our leaders want us to buy into the illusion that most people are “doing well” these days.

Of course that isn’t even close to the truth.

According to the Social Security Administration, the median wage for 2021 was just $37,586.03…

By definition, 50 percent of wage earners had net compensation less than or equal to the median wage, which is estimated to be $37,586.03 for 2021.

If we were still living in 1980, that would be fine.

But we aren’t in 1980 anymore.

In 2022, the poverty level for a household of five in the United States is $31,040.

That means that a worker in the United States making the median wage would be earning just enough to lift a family of five above the poverty line.

If you divide $37,586.03 by 12, that gives you a median monthly wage of $3,132.17.

For purposes of this article, I will round up and call it $3,133.

Half of all American workers make more than that per month, and half of all American workers make less than that per month.

And it is important to remember that this figure is before taxes are taken out.

Ouch.

Meanwhile, the cost of living continues to spiral out of control. Recently, the average rent on a single family home in the United States reached $2,495 a month…

Rent prices for single family homes swelled during the first half of 2022, hitting a national average of $2,495 a month — a 13.4% increase compared to the same period in 2021, according to a new report from national real estate brokerage HouseCanary.

If you are only earning $3,133 a month and you have to spend $2,495 a month for rent, that leaves you next to nothing for everything else.

For example, all of us have to eat.

But these days a single shopping cart full of food will easily run you more than 300 dollars.

And that is if you are trying to be really frugal.

Gasoline has also become extremely expensive.

All the way back in 1960, a gallon of gas cost just 31 cents.

Today, gas is approaching 7 dollars a gallon in some parts of California.

I could go on and on with more examples of the rapidly rising cost of living. Heating bills are expected to soar this winter, health insurance has gotten absurdly expensive, and new vehicles cost so much that most Americans can no longer afford them.

If things are this bad already, what will conditions be like for the middle class as the economy deteriorates in 2023 and beyond?

The worst housing crash since 2008 has now started, the financial markets are on pace for their worst year since 1969, and big companies all over America are starting to lay off people in large numbers.

Alarmingly, some of the biggest layoffs are actually being conducted by the big tech companies. In fact, we just learned that Microsoft will be laying off approximately 1,000 workers…

Microsoft will lay off about 1,000 employees, the company confirmed Tuesday.

Although it is not confirmed if the layoffs are isolated in gaming divisions, employees who work for Xbox and other Microsoft-owned studios said they were being laid off, the Washington Post reported. Axios first reported the layoffs Monday evening.

At this point, almost everyone can see that a recession is coming.

Even Jeff Bezos, who is usually extraordinarily optimistic, is warning people to “batten down the hatches”…

Bezos – who is the world’s second-richest man – tweeted a video of Goldman Sachs CEO David Solomon saying there was a ‘good chance’ of a downturn.

The Amazon founder – who has a $137 billion fortune – signaled his agreement by captioning the tweet: ‘Yep, the probabilities in this economy tell you to batten down the hatches.’

When Jeff Bezos starts sounding like The Economic Collapse Blog, you know that the hour is late.

These days, our impending economic downturn has even become a very hot topic among Hollywood celebrities…

Even non-billionaire-but-still-rich person Gwyneth Paltrow is losing sleep over it.

“The economy sucks,” she told the Hollywood Reporter this week. “I’m just worried about next year and how bad the recession’s gonna be.”

Other celebrities are weighing in, too. Last month, rapper Cardi B ranted about inflation and interest rates. “How are people surviving? I want to know.”

If the middle class is steadily eroding during relatively stable times, what is going to happen once the economy really begins to unravel?

There is so much anger all over the United States right now, and the vast majority of the population is simply not prepared for what is ahead.

I have been writing about the demise of the middle class for more than a decade, and the condition of the middle class has never been worse than it is right now.

At one time America had the largest and most prosperous middle class in the history of the world, and that was a wonderful thing.

But now very dark times for the middle class are here, and there doesn’t appear to be much hope on the horizon.

Kanye Made Honorary Member Of The Squad After Antisemitic Comments

After unleashing another barrage of antisemitic comments, Ye has been named an honorary member of "The Squad".

"Ye has that perfect combination of unhinged lunacy and Jew-hatred that we are looking for," said Representative Ilhan Omar. "We can't wait to welcome him to one of our 'Schindler's List' watch parties!"

Ye stated that he was tripping on psychiatric medications when he made the first round of antisemitic remarks but has since clarified that he just really hates Jews. "I do want to make it absolutely clear that those medications played no role whatsoever in expressing my disdain for Jewish people," said Ye. "I would further like to apologize to anyone who may have gotten the wrong impression about my deep-seated contempt for those greedy Zionists. It is one hundred percent real, and puts amateurs like Mel Gibson to shame."

After hearing the news, "Squad" members Ilhan Omar and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez immediately lobbied for Ye's inclusion into their group. "It's so refreshing to have a cultural icon like Ye share our vision of pushing Israel into the sea," said Omar. "We've fostered a lot of violence against Jewish people in my New York district, but we need people like Ye to really take that violence mainstream. I even made us all matching 'Non-Jew Lives Matter' shirts as a welcome gift!"

At publishing time, Ye had announced that any Jew who joins his social media app Parler will be identified by a little gold verification badge.

There's a Public School Child Sexual Abuse Epidemic No One Is Talking About by Matt Margolis

Did you think Drag Queen Story Hours, transgender closets, and porn in school libraries were where the sexual grooming of kids ended in the public school system? Guess again. There is a widespread epidemic that has not gotten enough attention, and that’s the shocking number of public educators who have been arrested for child sex-related crimes this year.

Nearly 270 public educators have been arrested for child sex-related crimes in the first nine months of the year. These crimes have been against students of all ages, including anything from simple grooming to statutory rape.

According to Fox News Digital, one public school educator has been arrested every day this year. This includes four principals, two assistant principals, 226 teachers, 20 TAs, and 17 substitute teachers. The majority of the arrests (75%) were for alleged crimes committed against students. Roughly 80% of those detained were men.

As disturbing as this is, the number of children whom public school officials and teachers have victimized is likely much higher, as the above numbers only represent those where an arrest has been made.

“The number of teachers arrested for child sex abuse is just the tip of the iceberg — much as it was for the Catholic Church prior to widespread exposure and investigation in the early 2000s,” Christopher Rufo, a senior fellow at the Manhattan Institute, told Fox News Digital. “The best available academic research, published by the Department of Education, suggests that nearly 10% of public school students suffer from physical abuse between kindergarten and twelfth grade.”

“According to that research, the scale of sexual abuse in the public schools is nearly 100 times greater than that of the Catholic Church,” Rufo added. “The question for critics who seek to downplay the extent of public-school sexual abuse is this: How many arrests need to happen before you consider it a problem? How many children need to be sexually abused by teachers before you consider it a crisis?”

The FBI’s Tac Vest Fascism by Dan Gelernter

I had heard about the FBI showing up in full regalia to arrest Paul Vaughn, father of 11, for a pro-life protest he’d been part of the previous year. Unlike the 2020 BLM peaceful protesters, Vaughn didn’t set anything on fire or kill anybody. But he had sat in the hallway of an abortion clinic singing hymns. The FBI swarmed his house wearing bulletproof vests and carrying AR-15s. They pointed guns at the door and banged on the house. Ultimately, they took the father away while ignoring his wife’s questions, including that an agent identify himself. At one point in the video, you can see this agent simply walks past her, waits sheepishly for the FBI driver to unlock the SUV’s door, and gets in and slams the door in the woman’s face. I recommend you find and watch a video of this for yourself, because there is no substitute for seeing it.

We only know this happened because the wife had the presence of mind to film it with her cell phone. But what if this is happening all over the country to people who aren’t lucky enough to have friends or family nearby with cameras? What if there are hundreds of Paul Vaughns being carted away by federal agents for crimes of civil disobedience?

Fascim has always needed a uniform, and the current one is windbreakers and tactical vests with big, government-agency letters blocked out in yellow. These bulletproof vests are not being worn for the agents’ safety: None of these agents actually worries about getting shot trying to arrest middle-aged family men. If they were worried about being shot, they’d come in tanks or send drones or just wait outside like the Uvalde police.

In reality, the FBI’s and ATF’s vests are like the KGB’s blue-tabbed uniforms or the brown shirts of Hitler’s SA, and are worn for the same reason: They represent the intimidation of unlimited government power against the ordinary citizen. It is the power of the faceless, nameless—they never give their names—and unaccountable bureaucracy. It is the uniform of evil’s enforcement wing. The FBI have become what Hilter’s SA once were: Sturm Arbteiling, storm detachments, storm troops, whose purpose is to achieve obedience through fear.

“We’re from the government, and we’re here to hurt.”

Americans have always hated the sight. Which is why it is illegal for the military to be deployed domestically: Do you imagine the inspiration for the Posse Comitatus Act had anything to do with whether the people roaming around your property and pointing guns at you were officially in the army? If they look like soldiers, dress like soldiers, seem to think they are soldiers, does it matter that they’re officially from some other part of the government? It is explicitly illegal that the military be used as a police force.

We do not tolerate, and have never tolerated, armies walking through our homes—not, at least, without firing back. Look at our Revolutionary War monuments: There is a reason the militiamen in our statues are dressed like farmers, not soldiers.

It should be illegal for the government to come to your house looking like an occupying military force under siege. And if they feel themselves actually to be under siege, perhaps they’re doing something wrong. Certainly, a Washington, D.C. surrounded with fences and barbed wire does not scream “government of the people!” It looks more like a bunch of pirates occupying spaces to which they have no right, and to which they know they have no right.

Tac vests, ballistic helmets, and for that matter “weapons of war” like AR-15s, have no place in the hands of federal agents. Their possession transforms these people into the domestic military presence from which we are protected by law. FBI agents should walk around wearing suits, floppy pink hats that say “FED!”, and perhaps they can have a little brass bell to ring if they need to draw attention to something. Because we are not a government that rules by force, but exactly the opposite. Our reliance is on our neighbors and a shared love and respect for freedom. Government isn’t just a bad substitute for those things, it’s the worst substitute.

Our state governments need to be active in protecting citizens from federal intimidation and lawbreaking. Federal troops are not welcome in a police capacity, no matter what agency they claim to represent. I would like Florida, as a test case, to tell the FBI that they don’t need vests and rifles to arrest non-violent offenders, and that, if they want the cooperation of the state, they’d better leave the military gear home.

In a recent speech, President Biden was quoted as saying "folks, two words: made in America." The internationally respected and trusted fact-checking organization Politifact examined Biden's statement that the phrase "made in America" was only two words and rated it "mostly true."

"While it is technically true that the phrase 'made in America' is 3 words, it's important to realize that 3 is only one number away from 2," said the piece. "One number away isn't that much. It's only a difference of 1. Therefore, we rate President Biden's claim as mostly true."

That didn't stop conservatives from pouncing on what they perceived as being a gaffe. "Look at Biden on stage, the dude's not even there," said Congressman Ted Cruz. "He babbles nonsensical, untrue things constantly! He has no business leading the country!"

Snopes then rated Ted Cruz's statements as "false," based on Politifact's fact check of Biden.

Memo to Christians: Here's what's REALLY at stake in midterm elections by David Kupelian

Horrified by what has been called the Sovietization of the Biden administration – including the shocking criminalization of dissent and the weaponization of the FBI, whose agents daily arrest, intimidate and persecute the regime's political opponents – tens of millions of Americans anxiously wonder whether November's midterm elections will bring any positive change of direction for a once-great nation now careening toward total destruction.

Although many voices are weighing in on "what's at stake" in the midterms, ironically no one has expressed it more clearly or forcefully than Joe Biden himself, in his astonishingly dark Sept. 1 "Soul of the Nation" speech, delivered while bathed in ominous red lights and flanked by Marine guards.

Of course, the key to de-coding Biden's dire warnings about the "greatest threats to America" is to understand that he was engaging in a mirror-perfect case of political projection: Every single evil that Biden ascribed to "MAGA Republicans" – the Left's new name for America's vast center-right middle class, literally the nation's backbone – is actually true of today's Democratic Party and its unhinged supporters.

Consider just a few highlights from Biden's Orwellian speech, in which he describes half of Republicans as "semi-fascists." Upon reading each statement, it becomes crystal clear which camp Biden's words truly describe – his own. Biden said:

• "MAGA Republicans represent an extremism that threatens the very foundations of our Republic."

• "MAGA forces ... promote authoritarian leaders, and they fan the flames of political violence that are a threat to our personal rights, to the pursuit of justice, to the rule of law, to the very soul of this country."

• "MAGA Republicans do not respect the Constitution. They do not believe in the rule of law. They do not recognize the will of the people. They refuse to accept the results of a free election."

• "MAGA Republicans ... embrace anger. They thrive on chaos. They live, not in the light of truth but in the shadow of lies."

• "MAGA Republicans look at America and see carnage and darkness and despair. They spread fear and lies. Lies told for profit and power."

Again, by just substituting "Radical Democrats" for "MAGA Republicans," one gains a vivid and stunningly accurate description of the ever-growing neo-communist threat to America.

A party 'possessed'

But what is at the root of the Democrats' maniacal daily exercises in projection? Or to expand the question exponentially: Why does evil always claim to be good and moral, or at least rational and logical, while claiming good is evil? (The biblical prophet Isaiah weighed in on this when he wrote, "Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil; that put darkness for light, and light for darkness; that put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter!")

What's at work here is not just the common human pathology that psychologists call projection – i.e., attributing one's own unacceptable qualities and actions to another person or group. It's also a cynical, vicious, cold-blooded political tactic: Projection is extremely effective as a weapon of protracted political warfare. It is, in fact, the essence of virtually everything today's Democratic Party leaders and their media apologists say from morning to night.

But delving deeper still, all of this is rooted in the fact that today's Democratic Party is, in a very real sense, "possessed" – that is, its political and thought leaders have been completely taken over by the kind of dark psychological and spiritual forces that readily capture the minds of corrupted human beings who have turned their backs on God and His laws of life. These exact same forces have animated history's most destructive, cult-like political movements, most obviously communism/Marxism/socialism, which has been metastasizing around the world for the past century – and now has its sights set on America.

Yet even such controversial ideological labels are, themselves, essentially lies intended to create a moral façade that either covers up or justifies deeply inhuman and criminal behavior. That is, the ideological labels are just an attempt to sell the notion that, whether or not one agrees with their ideology, "communists," "socialists" and "Marxists" – and "Antifa" (short for "anti-fascist"), "Black Lives Matter" and today's "Democratic Party" – still somehow have the interests of others at heart.

It's a lie. We're talking about sociopaths, people without a functioning conscience. Deeply corrupt people like Joe Biden, Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton, Nancy Pelosi, Chuck Schumer, Adam Schiff and their ilk do not possess the capacity to actually care about anyone else, any more than a drug addict has the capacity to unselfishly care about others. And these ruling elites are addicted to the most powerful and addictive drug of all: POWER.

Therefore, their daily attacks on law-abiding, Bible-believing, hardworking Americans as "violent extremists," "racists," "conspiracy theorists," "domestic terrorists" and "insurrectionists" merely constitute a colorful sideshow meant to distract voters from discerning the real problem: Today's leaders are consumed with perpetuating and increasing their own power, wealth, privilege, fame, supposed moral superiority, and revenge on their enemies.

In a word, they are hell-bent on being gods.

They have contempt for the "little people" they pretend to champion, those decent, long-suffering and conscience-driven folks who work hard, marry, raise families, pay their taxes, defend their country with their lives, and willingly do their part to preserve and perpetuate the greatest nation in history, which they love: America.

What's being described here is a deeply compromised and corrupt class of people, possessed and controlled by dark spiritual "powers and principalities" about which they know nothing, and care less. Whatever their professed religion, they are mockers of God, the same sort of people who self-righteously expanded communism over so much of the world and made the 20th century the bloodiest and deadliest in all of human history. Today, they're laser-focused on the biggest prize of all: The United States of America.

That's what's at stake.

America's saving grace

Fortunately, even though America is being likened increasingly to a third-world or communist dictatorship – not just because its current rulers crush and punish dissent, but because of their heedless monetary inflation, trashing of the nation's Constitution and continual threats to destroy and corrupt key American institutions from the Supreme Court to the electoral college – there is still one thing America retains, one saving grace, one sacred institution that one-party dictatorships from Zimbabwe to communist China do not have.

America still has real elections. And in truth, there is no reason the tens of millions of decent, right-thinking American voters cannot slow down, if not entirely halt, the Biden administration's nonstop madness in November's midterm elections just a few weeks from now.

I know what you're thinking: Of course the Democratic Party will try to steal the election – that's what they do – through every manner of election fraud, abuse and corruption for which their party is famous, not to mention Biden's mysterious executive order mandating every department of the federal government to essentially serve as a Democrat get-out-the-vote machine.

But good Americans, as former Trump adviser Steve Bannon passionately argues, simply must outvote whatever fraud occurs.

Therefore, one final word to Christians, who still constitute the vast majority of Americans and potential voters:

Every election cycle, tens of millions of American Christians do not vote!

How is that even possible, one wonders, considering that so much of what Democrats are pushing right now – from congressionally "codifying Roe" so that throughout America abortion will again be legal up to the moment of birth – i.e., straight-up infanticide – to expanding the satanic craze of amputating body parts of multitudes of children tricked into believing they're "transgender" – amounts to a grotesque frontal attack on everything Christians, indeed all decent people, consider sacred?

Here are the most common rationales cited by non-voting Christians: 1) Their particular church denomination tells them they are "citizens of heaven" or "not part of this world" and therefore don't need to vote; 2) they're so upset by government corruption they feel contaminated just reading and hearing about it; 3) they believe God will determine who leads America without their help; 4) they believe church and state should be "separate"; 5) they believe their focus should be the gospel, not politics; and finally, perhaps underlying all these reasons, 6) they've given up hope of any good ever coming out of Washington, regardless of who is elected. Indeed, many non-voters are so disillusioned by the lies and hypocrisy dominating politics that they have given up hope and walked away.

The Christian Broadcast Network, CBN, has reported that 15 million American Christians are not even registered to vote.

So listen up, Christian brothers and sisters: The history of Christianity is full of martyrs, believers who were burned alive, sawn in half or crucified to defend their faith, which they endured willingly, even gladly. Today, you are not being asked to endure torture and death, but rather, just to get in your car and drive to your polling place on Election Day and cast your ballot affirming good, and not the most abominable evils imaginable, so that your own children and grandchildren might inherit a safe and decent country in which to grow up, just as you did.

Father Murphy was playing golf with a parishioner. On the first hole, he sliced into the rough. The parishioner heard Father Murphy mutter, "Hoover!" under his breath.

On the second hole, the ball went straight into a water hazard. "Hoover!" again, a little louder this time.

On the third hole, a miracle occurred and Father Murphy's drive landed on the green only six inches from the hole! "Praise be to God!"

He carefully lined up the putt, but the ball curved around the hole instead of going in. "HOOVER!"

By this time, the parishioner couldn't withhold his curiosity any longer, and asked the priest, "Why do you say Hoover?"

"It's the biggest dam I know," he replied.

What Sort Of Man Was Columbus? by Jared Taylor

What sort of man was Christopher Columbus? Why did he cross the Atlantic and what did he do in the New World? The fashion is to despise him as a greedy, genocidal racist and slave driver, but Prof. Carol Delaney of Brown University refutes these charges [Columbus and the Quest for Jerusalem, Free Press, 2012]. His motives were almost entirely—even fanatically—Christian, and he was kind to Indians. She is mystified by the evil reputation he has acquired.

As Prof. Delaney explains, it is impossible to understand Columbus without understanding what committed Catholics thought in the 15th century. Most believed Christianity was the one true faith and that unbelievers went to hell. Evangelism was a duty. Many Christians were millenarians and believed that the End Times and the return of Christ—as described in Revelation—were coming soon. A series of catastrophes intensified this belief and prompted Christians to action.

According to Revelation, Christ could not return until Jerusalem was in Christian hands. The Crusader conquest of the Holy Land in 1099 was a gigantic step forward, but its loss to Saladin in 1187 shocked all Christendom. Then in 1347, the Black Plague killed an estimated 25 million Europeans and up to three-quarters of the people in parts of Italy and Spain. Another sign of the coming End Times was the Great Schism of 1378 to 1417, during which there were two competing Popes, but even worse was the fall of the Constantinople—the Eastern capital of Christianity—to the Turks in 1453. That year, Columbus was two years old; he grew up at a time when Catholics were desperately trying to understand how God could have permitted these horrors—loss of Jerusalem, plague, schism, fall of Constantinople—and were determined to win back lost ground. Columbus’ most fervent wish his entire life was to recapture the holy city of Jerusalem.

Prof. Delaney explains that Columbus was convinced he could help retake the Holy Land by sailing to China across the Atlantic. First, he would bring back gold, which was supposed to be plentiful in China, and this would finance a new crusade. Second, he could avoid the Silk Road land route to China, which was blocked after the fall of Constantinople. Third, he would meet the Chinese ruler, the Great Khan, convert him to Christianity, and persuade the Christian Chinese to attack from the East and help liberate Jerusalem. Fantastic as it now sounds, the idea of enlisting the Chinese to help bring on the Second Coming dated back to the time of Marco Polo and the publication of his Travels in 1300. Columbus owned a copy of the Travels and made many notes in the margins.

It was unusual for lay people to read the Bible, but Columbus read it diligently. His contemporaries wrote of his passionate Christianity, and he was strongly influenced by the Franciscans, who thought Christians should not wait passively for the End Times but work to bring them on. Columbus also took very seriously the duty to convert heathen peoples and save their souls.

Before the voyage

Columbus was an Italian who grew up in Genoa. He was nine years old when ships sailed from Genoa on a failed crusade, a sight that must have made a deep impression. When he was 14, he was apprenticed to the sea, and he got his first taste of the Atlantic on a voyage to England in 1476 when he was 25. In 1481 or ’82, he sailed to what is now Ghana, and stopped in the Canary Islands. He was a gifted navigator, with a widely admired talent for dead reckoning (navigation without instruments).

Columbus didn’t care which Christian sovereign financed his voyage to China. He met with King João II of Portugal, but the Portuguese were exploring the route around Africa, and were not interested. Columbus approached the British and the French, but it was the Spanish under Queen Isabella and King Ferdinand who showed the most interest. Still, it took 13 years from Columbus’ first audience with the queen until his first voyage in 1492. She put him off until the Moors were finally driven out of Spain, but even after the Reconquista, she hesitated. Ferdinand always doubted Columbus, and Isabella’s advisors tried to dissuade her, but she finally agreed to pay for three small ships and a crew of 90.

Discovery

Columbus kept a detailed diary of which only abridged versions survive, but they still tell us a great deal. After 31 days of sailing, so many of the crew insisted on turning back that Columbus promised that if they didn’t sight land in three days, he would give up and return to Spain. Two days later, the ships made landfall on what is now Watling Island in the Bahamas. There, Columbus found naked people, whom he thought handsome and intelligent. He gave them trade trinkets “in which they took so much pleasure and became so much our friends that it was a marvel.”

The Arawaks did not appear to have any kind of religion, and since they would not have to unlearn a pagan faith, Columbus thought they could be easily converted to Christianity. He wrote to his patrons: “They should be treated courteously because they are the best and most gentle people in the world, and especially, because I have much hope in Our Lord that Your Highnesses will make all of them Christian.”

Columbus had much more trouble with his own men. As the ships sailed from island to island, the natives were always gentle, but some ran away, and Columbus had to restrain his men from looting. In his diary, he wrote of his dissatisfaction with his men, especially compared to the natives: “I believe that in the world there are no better people or a better land. They love their neighbors as themselves, and they have the sweetest speech in the world and they are gentle and always laughing.” Columbus was entranced by the beauty of the islands, the vegetation, the birds and fishes. The natives slept in hammocks, which were then unknown in Europe, and soon all European sailors were sleeping in hammocks rather than on deck.

One of his captains, Martin Pinzon, disappeared for six weeks, looking for gold. When he rejoined the fleet, Columbus learned his crew had captured men and women; he ordered them freed and returned. Columbus kept hoping to find someone who could lead him to the Great Khan so he could present letters of greeting from Ferdinand and Isabella and teach him Christianity. Columbus persuaded six Arawaks to go back to Spain with him; they would prove he had reached India, and he wanted them to learn Spanish and Christianity so they could come back as missionaries.

The Santa Maria grounded and was wrecked on Christmas day. The crew set up a camp called Navidad, and Columbus left behind 40 men with instructions to be kind to the Indians. On the way back, the ships stopped at what is now the Dominican Republic and found a war-like tribe, very different from the Arawaks. In their first skirmish with Indians, his crew wounded several men with swords and crossbows. The Arawaks told Columbus these “Caribs” were cannibals and took slaves.

Columbus’ ships sailed back across the Atlantic and limped into port seven months and 11 days after they had initially set out. Columbus was a hero, and proudly presented his Indians to the queen, along with several gold pieces he had found. He promised her as many slaves as she might want, but only from among the man-eating Caribs. This was in accordance with Papal rules that permitted slavery only of savages who resisted Christianity and practiced vile habits such as sodomy or cannibalism. Isabella never had much interest in slaves; she wanted Indians converted where they were.

The queen financed a much larger second voyage: 17 ships and 1,200 men. They were to build a trading station for business with the Chinese, and Columbus was to receive one tenth of the profits. The queen commanded the settlers to treat the Indians “very well and lovingly.”

When the fleet returned to Navidad, Columbus found everyone dead. Friendly Indians told him the men had defied his orders and gone raping and looting. This angered a neighboring chief who attacked and slaughtered them. Columbus, who had had only good relations with these Indians, believed this account, well aware that the Spaniards could have deserved what they got, but many of the newcomers mistrusted the Indians and wanted revenge. Columbus managed to restrain them, and the fleet found a different site on Hispaniola for a new settlement.

Failure

Columbus was a genius at sea, but Prof. Delaney writes that he was a bad administrator. He thought men of different classes could work well together, but the high-ranking hidalgos who had come on the voyage refused to work and expected easy riches. They would not farm, would not eat the local food—which Columbus and others enjoyed—and wrote letters back to Spain complaining about Columbus. When Columbus went on further voyages of discovery looking for gold and the Khan, men he left behind went into the interior to rape and plunder.

Columbus put his brother Bartholomew in charge of the settlement and went back to Spain. He arrived dressed in the coarse, brown habit of a Franciscan, which he wore for the rest of his life. Prof. Delaney suspects this was a reaction to the greed and cruelty of the Spanish. Columbus thought the settlers were bad missionaries. When he saw the queen, he asked for better friars than the ones she had sent on the second voyage. They thought baptism was enough to turn anyone Christian, but Columbus thought Indians should get careful instruction in the faith. For the rest of his life, he stressed the importance of missionaries who could speak Indian languages.

Columbus was in Spain for two years between his second and third voyages, and this time set out with just 330 people, of which 30 were women. Prof. Delaney says it is not clear whether they were wives, servants, or prostitutes who were supposed to keep the Spaniards from raping Indians. When Columbus got back to the settlement, he found that dissidents had up risen up against Bartholomew’s strict government. Columbus did his best to end what was a low-level civil war and restore order. He was furious at continuing reports of Spaniards who had mistreated Indians, and hanged the worst offenders. He never permitted enslavement of Indians but, under pressure, he imposed a tax on Indians to be paid in crops or in gold.

Some hidalgos defied Columbus’ authority, so he wrote to the queen, asking her to send an arbitrator to back up his authority. Prof. Delaney writes that it is now known why Isabella chose Francisco de Bobadilla, whose mind was already poisoned against Columbus by men who had returned to Spain. He sided with the insurgents and sent Columbus back to Spain in chains. The settlers far preferred Bobadilla, who let them exploit and even murder Indians. Isabella freed Columbus after his return, but he kept the chains for the rest of his life as a reminder of his humiliation.

While in Spain, Columbus wrote what is called the Book of Prophecies, a long theological justification of his life and travels. He saw his discoveries as an important part of a great cosmological drama that was to culminate in the End Times. The book quotes scripture to claim that his voyages were divinely inspired and fulfilled Biblical prophecy. It explains why he was so conscious of the meaning of his first name, Christopher, which means the Christ-bearer. He believed he was carrying Christ to the East.

Prof. Delaney notes that most Columbus scholars are shocked by the Book of Prophecies and try to ignore it. Whatever they think of him, they don’t like to think he was a religious nut, and the book was not translated into English until 1992. It is, however, a clear statement of his motives.

Columbus set out on his last voyage in 1502. He had orders only to explore; the colonies had several thousand inhabitants, and the queen took administration out of his hands. He made more discoveries, especially in Central America, but suffered a series of mishaps that included a shipwreck that left him marooned on Jamaica for a year and five days.

Shortly after his return to Spain, Isabella died. Ferdinand never had much faith in Columbus and financed no more voyages. Columbus did not live in poverty or obscurity but never regained anything like the glory he won after his first voyage.

Prof. Delaney is baffled by Columbus’ bad reputation. She notes that, by contrast, Bartolomé de Las Casas—who knew and admired Columbus—is now considered a hero because he defended the rights of Indians at the Valladolid debate of 1550–1551. Las Casas insisted that Indians be recognized as free men with the same rights as Spaniards. Prof. Delaney writes: “Las Casas is remembered only for his defense of the Indian; what is forgotten is that he owned slaves and endorsed and operated encomiendas [plantations on which Indians were serfs] while Columbus, who never owned slaves, is reviled and blamed for everything that went wrong in the Indies.”

Academics may consider Las Casas a humanitarian, but the people now pulling down statues of Columbus have probably never heard of him. Nor would they care if someone told them Columbus was kind to Indians and hanged Spaniards who mistreated them. Columbus’ crime is to have come here; he brought white people to the New World. He used to be honored for this, but today, that makes him a villain.
