8 Superior Alternatives To Public School For Your Kids

Gone are the days when you could just ship your kids off to the public school system every day and trust them to come out still sane and reasonably educated. But what are the alternatives?

Let them join the circus: There are way fewer freaks at the circus.

Get them a job at Willy Wonka's Chocolate Factory: They might be drowned in a chocolate river, incinerated, or turned into a giant blueberry, but they might survive all of Wonka's deathtraps and inherit the whole place.

Have them build forts in the backyard: It will prepare them for the fall of civilization.

Gaza: Much safer.

Coal mines: It will help them develop a strong work ethic, which is something you don't get in public school!

Make them a child actor on a Disney Channel show: If they're going to be scarred for life, you might as well make some money off of it.

Send them out into the woods with a hatchet: Unlike public school, this scenario allows them to protect themselves.

Have them do anything else, literally anything: Just don't send them to public school, for goodness' sake!

With so many options to choose from, it's plain to see that for kids who don't go to public school, the possibilities are endless. And much, much safer, too.

Is Free Speech A Relic In America? by James Bovard

Is the First Amendment becoming a historic relic? On July 4, 2023, federal judge Terry Doughty condemned the Biden administration for potentially “the most massive attack against free speech in United States history.” That verdict was ratified by a federal appeals court decision in September 2023 that concluded that Biden administration “officials have engaged in a broad pressure campaign designed to coerce social-media companies into suppressing speakers, viewpoints, and content disfavored by the government.”

In earlier times in America, such policies would have faced sweeping condemnation from across the political spectrum. But major media outlets like the Washington Post have rushed to the barricades to defend the Biden war on “misinformation.” Almost half of Democrats surveyed in September 2023 affirmed that free speech should be legal “only under certain circumstances.” Fifty-five percent of American adults support government suppression of “false information” - even though only 20 percent trust the government.

Biden’s War on Free Speech

The broad support for federal censorship is perplexing considering that courts have vividly laid out the government’s First Amendment violations. Doughty delivered 155 pages of damning details of federal browbeating, jawboning, and coercion of social-media companies. Doughty ruled that federal agencies and the White House “engaged in coercion of social media companies” to delete Americans’ comments on Afghanistan, Ukraine, election procedures, and other subjects. He issued an injunction blocking the feds from “encouraging, pressuring, or inducing in any manner the removal, deletion, suppression, or reduction of content containing protected free speech.”

Censors reigned from the start of the Biden era. Barely two weeks after Biden’s inauguration, White House Digital Director Rob Flaherty demanded that Twitter “immediately” remove a parody account of Biden’s relatives. Twitter officials suspended the account within 45 minutes but complained they were already “bombarded” by White House censorship requests at that point.

Biden White House officials ordered Facebook to delete humorous memes, including a parody of a future television ad: “Did you or a loved one take the COVID vaccine? You may be entitled….” The White House continually denounced Facebook for failing to suppress more posts and videos that could inspire “vaccine hesitancy” — even if the posts were true. Facebook decided that the word “liberty” was too hazardous in the Biden era; to placate the White House, the company suppressed posts “discussing the choice to vaccinate in terms of personal or civil liberties.”

Flaherty was still unsatisfied and raged at Facebook officials in a July 15, 2021, email: “Are you guys f–king serious?” The following day, President Biden accused social-media companies of “killing people” by failing to suppress all criticism of COVID vaccines.

Federal Censorship

Censorship multiplied thanks to an epic bureaucratic bait-and-switch. After allegations of Russian interference in the 2016 election, the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Act was created to protect against foreign meddling. Prior to Biden taking office, CISA had a “Countering Foreign Influence Task Force.” In 2021, that was renamed the “Mis-, Dis- and Mal-information Team (‘MDM Team’).”

But almost all the targets of federal censorship during the Biden era have been Americans. Federal censorship tainted the 2020 and 2022 elections, spurring the suppression of millions of social-media posts (almost all from conservatives). During the 2020 election, CISA targeted for suppression assertions such as “mail-in voting is insecure” — despite the long history of absentee ballot fraud.

CISA aims to control Americans’ minds: A CISA advisory committee last year issued a report that “broadened” what it targeted to include “the spread of false and misleading information because it poses a significant risk to critical function, like elections, public health, financial services and emergency responses.” Thus, any idea that government officials label as “misleading” is a “significant risk” that can be suppressed.

Where did CISA find the absolute truths it used to censor American citizens? CISA simply asked government officials and “apparently always assumed the government official was a reliable source,” the court decision noted. Any assertion by officialdom was close enough to a Delphic oracle to use to “debunk postings” by private citizens. Judge Doughty observed that the free-speech clause was enacted to prohibit agencies like CISA from picking “what is true and what is false.”

Covid-Inspired Censorship

“Government = truth” is the premise for the Biden censorship regime. In June 2022, Flaherty declared that he “wanted to monitor Facebook’s suppression of COVID-19 misinformation ‘as we start to ramp up [vaccines for children under the age of 5].’” The FDA had almost zero safety data on COVID vaccines for infants and toddlers. But Biden announced the vaccines were safe for those target groups, so any assertion to the contrary automatically became false or misleading.

Biden policymakers presumed that Americans are idiots who believe whatever they see on Facebook. In an April 5, 2021, phone call with Facebook staffers, White House Strategy Communication chief Courtney Rowe said, “If someone in rural Arkansas sees something on FB [Facebook], it’s the truth.”

In the same call, a Facebook official mentioned nose bleeds as an example of a feared COVID vaccine side effect. Flaherty wanted Facebook to intervene in purportedly private conversations on vaccines and “Direct them to CDC.” A Facebook employee told Flaherty that “an immediate generated message about nose bleeds might give users ‘the Big Brother feel.’” At least the Biden White House didn’t compel Facebook to send form notices every 90 seconds to any private discussion on COVID: “The Department of Homeland Security wishes to remind you that there is no surveillance. Have a nice day.” Flaherty also called for Facebook to crack down on WhatsApp exchanges (private messages) between individuals.

Federal agencies responded to legal challenges by portraying themselves as the same “pitiful, helpless giants” that President Richard Nixon invoked to describe the US government when he started bombing Cambodia. Judge Doughty wrote that federal agencies “blame the Russians, COVID-19 and capitalism for any suppression of free speech by social-media companies.” But that defense fails the laugh test.

Federal agencies pirouetted as a “Ministry of Truth,” according to the court rulings, strong-arming Twitter to arbitrarily suspend 400,000 accounts, including journalists and diplomats.

The Biden administration rushed to sway the appeals court to postpone enforcement of the injunction and then sought to redefine all its closed-door shenanigans as public service. In its briefs to the court, the Justice Department declared, “There is a categorical, well-settled distinction between persuasion and coercion,” and castigated Judge Doughty for having “equated legitimate efforts at persuasion with illicit efforts to coerce.”

Biden’s Justice Department denied that federal agencies bullied social-media companies to suppress any information. Instead, there were simply requests for “content moderation,” especially regarding COVID. Actually, there were tens of thousands of “requests” that resulted in the suppression of millions of posts and comments by Americans.

Team Biden champions a “no corpse, no delicta” definition of censorship. Since federal SWAT teams did not assail the headquarters of social-media firms, the feds are blameless. Or, as Justice Department lawyer Daniel Tenny told the judges, “There was a back and forth. Sometimes it was more friendly, sometimes people got more testy. There were circumstances in which everyone saw eye to eye, there were circumstances in which they disagreed.”

It’s irrelevant that President Joe Biden publicly accused social-media companies of murder for not censoring far more material and that Biden appointees publicly threatened to destroy the companies via legislation or prosecution. Nope: It was just neighborly discussions between good folks.

The Courts Strike Back

At the appeals court hearing, Judge Don Willett, one of the most principled and penetrating judges in the nation, had no problem with federal agencies publicly criticizing what they judged false or dangerous ideas. But that wasn’t how Team Biden compelled submission: “Here you have government in secret, in private, out of the public eye, relying on … subtle strong-arming and veiled or not-so-veiled threats.” Willett vivified how the feds played the game: “That’s a really nice social-media platform you’ve got there, it would be a shame if something happened to it.”

Judge Jennifer Elrod compared the Biden censorship regime to the Mafia: “We see with the mob … they have these ongoing relationships. They never actually say, ‘Go do this or else you’re going to have this consequence.’ But everybody just knows.”

Yet the Biden administration was supposedly innocent because the feds never explicitly spelled out “or else,” according to the Justice Department lawyer. This is on par with redefining armed robbery as a consensual activity unless the robber specifically points his gun at the victim’s head. As economist Joseph Schumpeter aptly observed, “Power wins, not by being used, but by being there.”

In its September decision, the appeals court concluded that the White House, FBI, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and the US Surgeon General’s office trampled the First Amendment by coercing social media companies and likely “had the intended result of suppressing millions of protected free speech postings by American citizens.”

The court unanimously declared that federal officials made express threats…. But, beyond express threats, there was always [italic in original] an “unspoken or else.” The officials made clear that the platforms would [italic in original] suffer adverse consequences if they failed to comply, through express or implied threats, and thus the requests were not optional.

The appeals court also took a “real-world” view of the nation’s most feared law enforcement agency: “Although the FBI’s communications did not plainly reference adverse consequences, an actor need not express a threat aloud so long as, given the circumstances, the message intimates that some form of punishment will follow noncompliance.” The federal appeals court upheld part of the injunction while excluding some federal agencies from anticensorship restrictions.

The Biden administration quickly appealed the partial injunction to the Supreme Court, telling the court: “Of course, the government cannot punish people for expressing different views…. But there is a fundamental distinction between persuasion and coercion. And courts must take care to maintain that distinction because of the drastic consequences resulting from a finding of coercion.”

The Biden brief bewailed that the appeals court found that “officials from the White House, the Surgeon General’s office, and the FBI coerced social-media platforms to remove content despite the absence of even a single instance in which an official paired a request to remove content with a threat of adverse action.” But both the federal district court and the appeals court decisions offered plenty of examples of federal threats.

The New Civil Liberties Alliance, one of the plaintiffs, scoffed: “The Government argues that the injunction interferes with the government’s ability to speak. The Government has a wide latitude to speak on matters of public concern, but it cannot stifle the protected speech of ordinary Americans.” And the injunction impedes federal officials from secretly coercing private companies to satisfy White House demands.

As the Biden administration pressured the Supreme Court, the anticensorship lawyers on September 25 secured an en banc rehearing of their case, which consists of a panel of all 17 active Fifth Circuit judges. The plaintiffs were especially concerned that the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Act was excluded from the injunction. CISA and its array of federal censorship contractors have sowed far too much mischief in recent years. The appeals court modified the injunction to put a leash on CISA.

Censorship could cast the deciding vote in the 2024 presidential election. Judge Doughty issued his injunction in part because federal agencies “could use their power over millions of people to suppress alternative views or moderate content they do not agree with in the upcoming 2024 national election.”

Much of the mainstream media is horrified at the prospect of reduced federal censorship. The Washington Post article on Doughty’s decision fretted, “For more than a decade, the federal government has attempted to work with social media companies to address criminal activity, including child sexual abuse images and terrorism.” The Post did not mention the Biden crusade to banish cynicism from the Internet. Journalist Glenn Greenwald scoffed, “The most surreal fact of U.S. political life is that the leading advocates for unified state/corporate censorship are large media corporations.”

Fifty years ago, philosopher Hannah Arendt wrote of the “most essential political freedom, the right to unmanipulated factual information without which all freedom of opinion becomes a cruel hoax.” The battle over federal censorship will determine whether Americans can have more than a passing whiff of that political freedom. Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost joined the lawsuit against censorship and commented in September: “The federal government doesn’t get to play referee on the field of public discourse. If you let them decide what speech is OK, one day yours might not be.”

On October 20, the Supreme Court announced that it would rule on this case, with a decision expected within a few months. Stay tuned for plenty of legal fireworks and maybe even good news for freedom.

Quote of the Times;
“That obligation is false because the private central banking system, by design, creates more debt than money with which to pay the debt,” Rivero explains. “There is no way out, the way it’s set up. It’s impossible to escape as long as you’re playing by their rules. And you need to understand, private central banking is not science. It is a religion. It’s a set of arbitrary rules created to benefit the priesthood, meaning the bankers, and is supported only because people believe this is the way it’s supposed to be. The fraud persists with often lethal results only because the people are brainwashed into believing that this is the way life is supposed to be and no alternative exists or should even be dreamt of.”

Issue of the Times;
Mass Migration, Ethnic Cleansing, and The Great Reset by Dr. Joseph Sansone

When it comes to biological systems, totally open or totally closed systems die. This is true of a single cell. A cell in the human body has a semi permeable membrane. It has a boundary that allows materials in and out, however, it would not survive if it were totally open nor if it were totally closed. This is true of nations as well. A nation that is totally closed becomes repressive and withers away under that oppressive system. This would likely be politically, culturally, and intellectually. If a nation has no boundaries, it will also eventually die. Its culture and people will fade away.

The American Indians may be the perfect example of this phenomenon. The North American continent was peopled with various different Indian nations. The Iroquois, the Sioux, Cherokee, and other Indian nations or tribes no longer exist because they had a mass migration problem stemming from Europe. Tribes were victims of a technologically more advanced culture combined with massive numbers of migrants that could not be countered. The result was genocide in various forms and the surviving Indians either being pushed into reservations or genetically intermingled with European peoples. The net result was ethnic cleansing, and this ethnic cleansing would have occurred even without the violence, merely from a diluting of the existing population and culture.

This process is occurring in Ireland. In this recent interview with Steve Bannon on Tucker Carlson the issue of massive immigration impacting Ireland was discussed in detail. Bannon explains to Carlson that Ireland is being targeted with 125,000 immigrants in the past year which would be the equivalent of the 9 million illegal aliens that have entered the United States since fake president Biden took office coming to the United States in one year. Bannon points out that the Irish political class have totally sold out. Tucker Carlson pointed out that it appears to be a form of racial hatred or punishment toward the Irish by the British. In a hundred years the Irish population with be displaced and become a minority in Ireland if the trend continues.

This of course has created animosity in Ireland and recent riots broke out after a citizen of Algerian decent stabbed a child. The Irish government has essentially made it a crime to criticize immigration policies under the blanket of hate speech.

The 9 million people that have invaded the United States under fake president Biden is likely to be 15 million by the time the fake election comes. It is subtle, but if you pick up a slight degree of cynicism on my part directed toward the computer elections, you’d be right…

This unfettered migration will clearly lead to Americans of European decent becoming a minority in the United States relatively soon. This is unique because it is an intentional effort to displace a dominant population. It may also lead to the culture itself withering away.

Why is this happening?

The deliberate policy of destabilizing immigration has multiple purposes. The overarching intention is to overthrow the United States by sublimating it into a Global government. Displacing the current population is part of the process. It is a deliberate intention to splinter the culture enough to eliminate an American identity. Once an American Identity is fractured enough there will be less resistance to a Global government. The understanding and identification of the ideals of the American republic and the principles of the Declaration of Independence can be easily undermined as this process continues.

Forcibly removing a population and relocating them is a form of ethnic cleansing. So is forcibly displacing a population with massive migration. Make no mistake about it, this is being done by force by ignoring the will of the populace and Constitutional duty to protect the borders, and through wealth redistribution.

Understand, that even with the radical levels of immigration into the United States since the 1965 immigration act, and the constant flow of illegal immigration into the United States since then, there is still a process of assimilation occurring. Second and third generation Americans, even of non European decent, are assimilating and adopting the dominant culture while simultaneously shifting the already pliable Western culture. The migrants adapt to the culture while the culture adapts to their contributions. This is evident as many recent Americans of non-European decent are equally outraged by the massive amount of illegal immigration occurring. Due to this process of assimilation, the illegal immigration campaign has been enhanced dramatically over the past few years.

The American cultural history and concept of individual liberty must be erased completely. In other words, the flow of immigration into the United States must outpace the process of assimilation, or the destruction of this thing we call the United States and the American culture, will not occur. This is because culture is not only inherited, it is also adopted.

Gaining votes is part of the plan by creating a perpetual underclass. Cheap labor is of course a secondary gain for corporations to support this self-destructive campaign. However, for the taxpayer there are financial burdens placed on government and infrastructure. According to CIS:

"The average immigrant household consumes 33 percent more cash welfare, 57 percent more food assistance, and 44 percent more Medicaid dollars than the average native household. Housing costs are about the same for both groups."

It also appears that reliance on welfare is relevant to the area of origin.

‘The cost of immigrant welfare use varies by the immigrants' region of origin. Figure 2 shows that the highest-cost households are those headed by immigrants from Central America and Mexico, consuming an average of $8,251 in welfare spending. Households headed by immigrants from Europe and Asia tend to be the least costly.”

A shocking 49.5 million or 15% of the United States population is foreign born. This is the highest it has been in any government survey or census ever conducted. According to CIS:

“The foreign-born population has grown on average by 137,000 a month since President Biden took office, compared to 42,000 a month during Trump’s presidency before Covid-19 hit, and 68,000 a month during President Obama’s two terms.”

It is true that this United States is a nation of immigrants or the descendants of immigrants. That is obvious. Actually, every nation is a nation of immigrants or their descendants. Humans have been migrating across the planet and displacing each other since they learned to walk. However, while not always the case, this process often involved conflict and war.

The advances in technology communication and transportation make enhanced migration inevitable. The difference with the situation in the United States and Europe especially, is that it is being done on purpose and coordinated by their own governments in cooperation with a Global deep state bent on global governance.

While the warfare and welfare state have bankrupted the United States economically, the massive migration into the United States is designed to splinter the United States culturally and ethnically. The United States can’t remain a superpower. There must be a multipolar world in order to submerge the United States into this New World Government.

The current levels of legal and illegal immigration have created a degree of havoc that outweighs the contributions and innovations that inevitably arise out of each wave of immigration. Just as the American Indian, their culture, and their way of life, were displaced, America and the American way of life may face a similar fate.

Massive unfettered migration is one puzzle piece in The Great Reset.

Chaos and conflict are part of the plan…

A short history of Joe's long record of lying about Biden Inc. by David Harsanyi

David Harsanyi notes left-wing media have been forced to change their language over the years.

After being asked the other day why he's interacted with "so many" foreign associates of his son Hunter and brother James, President Joe Biden responded by claiming the allegations were "a bunch of lies."

This, of course, wasn't the first time the president blatantly lied about his role in the family influence-peddling business.

You might recall that during a 2020 campaign event, the then-presidential hopeful was asked by an Iowa man if the former vice president's son Hunter Biden had ever had "access to the Obama administration."

The future president, who had vowed to bring decorum and decency back to the White House, called the man a "damn liar" and "fat" and told him he was "too old" before insulting his IQ.

This act of projection from Biden should have been a warning. It was modus operandi for Joe, whose preternatural dishonesty was impressive even for a politician, to question the mental fitness of those who caught him in a lie.

Biden would go on to contend to have never "discussed with my son anything having to do with what was going on in Ukraine. That's a fact." Another time, the former veep claimed he "never discussed a single thing with my son having to do with Ukraine. No one has indicated I have. We've always kept everything separate."

Not a single thing.

When the New York Post broke the Hunter Biden laptop story, strongly indicating that Joe had lied, virtually the entire left-wing media tried to bury the story by relying on the claim of former intelligence officials that the story smelled like Russian "disinformation." Even Joe noted that the "vast majority of the intelligent people have come out and said there's no basis at all."

Well, we soon found out there was plenty of basis to the story. Hunter had hosted a dinner in a private room at Cafe Milano in Washington, D.C., with his dad and an executive from the Biden-funders at Burisma. And in an email dated the next day, the Ukrainian exec thanked Hunter for the meeting with his dad.

In scores of other emails and texts, Hunter talks about his dad helping him secure payments and taking a cut. Indeed, one of Hunter's former business partners contends Joe was involved in the family business, as does Hunter's former close friend, who testified under oath that Joe was on upward of 20 calls with business associates.

At this point, there was overwhelming direct evidence that Joe was a willing participant, at the very least, in creating the impression that influence trading was happening and plenty of circumstantial evidence that the elder Biden was getting a 10% cut for his troubles.

And as evidence of the president's lies about his family's influence-peddling business mounted, "fact-checkers" and the media began struggling to keep up with fresh information. At first, we were told there was "no evidence" that Biden knew anything. Suddenly, there was "no evidence" that Biden had personally benefited from Biden Inc. (as if enriching your entire family wasn't personal enough).

Why then, people wondered, had James Biden written his brother Joe a personal check for $200,000, that also happened to be the exact amount James had received from the failed Chinese-connected Americore family venture on that very same day? Talk about crazy coincidences.

It was around this time that White House language began subtly shifting from blanket denials to finely tuned Clintonesque turns of phrase about Joe never being "in business with his son."

This week, the House Oversight Committee released financial documents illustrating that Hunter signed off on monthly transfers to Joe through Owasco PC, a Biden shell company that pulled at least $5 million from the Chicom energy concerns in 2017 and 2018. The Daily Mail reports there were at least three payments, from September 2018 to November 2018, or a few months before Biden announced he was running for president.

Granted, it's not always easy to find the money trail. The Biden family operated through at least 20 shell companies – as one does when running a completely above-board legit business venture. It's not easy to keep up.

You might also recall that in 2020, Biden had claimed Hunter never "made money in terms of this thing about – what are you talking about – China." But Hunter had not only tagged along on an Air Force Two trip to China in 2013; he'd introduced his dad to the Chinese banker that would be working on a Biden private equity fund.

So I eagerly look forward to fact-checkers, media and the White House clarifying why this is all just fine. From Joe Biden "knew nothing" to Joe Biden "did nothing" to none of what Joe Biden did was "illegal" – it's been a wild ride.

Exposing The 2020 Fed-Ordered, Academic-Run, Corporate-Censorship Extortion Racket from the New York Post Editorial Board

The Department of Homeland Security was censoring speech before the 2020 election, new emails released by the House Judiciary Committee show.

How? Through the favorite weapon of America’s intelligence apparatus, fake claims of disinformation.

Stanford University’s Election Integrity Partnership was set up at the request of DHS and its Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency, says a senior member of one of the EIP’s founding groups, and they were “in weekly comms to debrief about disinfo.”

That was in July 2020.

It’s beyond clear that this was part of battlespace prep to help Joe Biden win that November.

The EIP came after a number of other “disinformation” operations had been deployed against then-President Donald Trump.

Most notorious was RussiaGate, a scheme in which 100%-false claims that Trump was colluding with the Russian government were laundered through the Justice Department and Congress.

Another was the effort to suppress our reporting around Hunter Biden’s laptop (also 100% correct).

But this was about more than Trump.

It was about total control of everybody’s speech and thought.

Per the Judiciary Committee, feds and universities “pressured social media companies to censor true information, jokes, and political opinions.”

And guess what? The companies did.

Turns out, implicitly threatening an industry whose regulation you oversee works.

Shocking no one, “this pressure was largely directed in a way that benefitted one side of the political aisle: true information posted by Republicans and conservatives was labeled as ‘misinformation’ while false information posted by Democrats and liberals was largely unreported and untouched by the censors,” the committee notes.

And the overall purpose of this effort was to “censor Americans engaged in core political speech in the lead up to the 2020 election.”

You know the rest of the story.

Once in office, Biden kept up the censorship push.

Recall the short-lived Disinformation Governance Board, a literal Ministry of Truth the administration attempted to convene in spring 2022 that sank under the weight of its obvious unconstitutionality.

And the Missouri v. Biden lawsuit has revealed that this censorship-via-cutout extended beyond political speech to COVID claims and other key issues.

Most claims about a “deep state” end up sounding like conspiratorial hogwash.

But it’s increasingly hard to deny that high-powered elements of our intelligence and security apparatus were working to oust Trump — and doubled down on violating the rights of all Americans once Biden took over.

The "Trilemma" That Runs The World by James Rickards

Today we’re considering the real environment that determines economic conditions.

It has nothing to do with short-term data, Fed policy, conventional economic models or other factors most economic commentary focuses on.

Instead, it has to do with the “trilemma,” identified in the 1960s by economist Robert Mundell.

Mundell identified three critical policy variables that nations face:

1. the central bank policy rate,

2. the exchange rate,

3. and open capital accounts.

He said that nations could control any two of these variables, but not all three at once.

If you want to control the policy rate and the exchange rate you can, but you have to close your capital account. Otherwise, if your policy rate is high and your capital account is open, capital will flow in and make your exchange rate higher than you want.

Or if you have a set exchange rate and open capital account, you have to let your policy rate float along with other central banks to avoid the exchange rate pressure.

In the first case, you control the policy rate and have an open capital account, but you lose control over exchange rates. In the second case, you control your exchange rate and have an open capital account, but you lose control of your policy rate. The only way to control the policy rate and the exchange rate is to close the capital account.

As Mundell explained, you can control two of the three factors, but not all three.

If you try, you will fail — markets will make sure of that. A country that attempts to have all three will fail in one of several ways including a reserve crisis, an exchange rate crisis or a recession.

Freedonia Can’t Escape the Trilemma

Consider the case of a country — call it Freedonia — that wants to cut its interest rate from 3% to 2% to stimulate growth. At the same time, Freedonia’s main trading partner, Sylvania, has an interest rate of 3%.

Freedonia also keeps an open capital account (to encourage direct foreign investment).

Finally, Freedonia pegs its exchange rate to Sylvania at a rate of 10-1. This is a “cheap” exchange rate designed to stimulate exports from Freedonia to Sylvania.

In this example, Freedonia is trying the impossible trinity. It wants an open capital account, a fixed exchange rate and an independent monetary policy (it has an interest rate of 2% while Sylvania’s rate is 3%).

What happens next?

The arbitrageurs get to work. They borrow money in Freedonia at 2% in order to invest in Sylvania at 3%. This causes the Freedonia central bank to sell its foreign exchange reserves and print local currency to meet the demand for local currency loans and outbound investment.

Printing the local currency puts downward pressure on the fixed exchange rate and causes inflation in local prices.

Eventually something breaks.

Country Freedonia may run out of foreign exchange forcing it to close the capital account or break the peg (this is what happened to the U.K. in 1992 when George Soros broke the Bank of England).

Or country Freedonia will print so much money that inflation will get out of control forcing it to raise interest rates again.

The exact policy response can vary, but the end result is that country Freedonia cannot maintain the trilemma. It will have to raise interest rates, close the capital account, break the peg or all three in order to avoid losing all of its foreign exchange and going broke.

This shows you how powerful the trilemma is as an analytic tool.

The Trilemma Explains the Strong Dollar

The major economies today all have mostly open capital accounts (although China does impose some restrictions), which means they can control interest rates or exchange rates, but not both.

Most major economies fix short-term interest rates, which means they lose control over exchange rates.

This means the interest rate and the exchange rate have to be thought of as a pair. A higher interest rate generally results in a stronger currency. That’s exactly what the U.S. is experiencing today where sharply higher interest rates have resulted in a stronger dollar.

The ability of central banks to pursue any interest rate policy they might prefer is further constrained by conditions in the real economy.

Central banks target policy rates intended to produce maximum real growth, low unemployment and price stability.

As noted above, if maximum potential real growth in the U.S. is about 3%, the Fed will target a neutral rate of interest (also called r*) that will produce 3% growth, which is consistent with price stability and should optimize employment at the same time.

If the Fed guesses at a neutral rate that is too high, they will slow the economy, hurt job growth and cause disinflation or deflation. If the Fed guesses at a neutral rate that is too low, they will cause the economy to run hot, tighten labor markets and cause inflation.

Since the Fed is guessing, they are likely to guess wrong. Sooner than later, the Fed’s incorrect guess shows up in economic data.

Still, the result of trying to hit a neutral rate means central banks will wander high or low while trying to converge on the unseen target. Other central banks are doing the same.

This neutral rate targeting combined with Mundell’s trilemma shows us that all major central banks with reserve currency status are not really free agents but are highly constrained by the need to hit the neutral rate, avoid inflation or deflation and maintain reasonably stable exchange rates.

This is a highly imperfect process with many errors committed along the way, but it does provide a framework for forecasting international monetary policy using just a few key factors.

The One Big Exception to the Trilemma

By the way, there’s historically been one big exception to the trilemma. That’s the United States.

The U.S. sets interest rates independently and has an open capital account. The U.S. does not officially peg the dollar to any other currency (thus technically not breaking the trilemma). But it does work with other countries to allow them to informally peg to the dollar.

Why hasn’t the U.S. suffered adverse consequences? Because the U.S. doesn’t need foreign exchange.

The dollar is still the leading reserve currency in the world (about 60% of global reserves and close to 90% of global foreign exchange trades), so the U.S. can never run out of foreign exchange to pay for things. It can just print more dollars!

This is what the French called the dollar’s “exorbitant privilege” in the 1960s.

Now you see why so many trading partners like the BRICS nations are trying to escape from a dollar-denominated global system (among other reasons, like escaping dollar-based sanctions).

The game is rigged against other countries, and in favor of the U.S.

This is why the game won’t last — and why King Dollar’s days are numbered.
